Getting Started

Domains are the URL or web addresses that customers enter in order to arrive at your online store's web page. If your store decides to purchase a domain through Shopify, a standard web address ending in myshopify.com will be given. If your store decides to go through a third-party vendor for your domain, you will need to reach out to them about setting up the domain and linking it back to Shopify. This page will focus on adding and linking domains to your Shopify web page, whether through Shopify or a Third-Party vendor. For more information, check out Domains.

Adding a Domain to Shopify

Before you can begin focusing on customizing your store's Shopify domain name, you first have to go through the proper channels to secure the domain. Generally, there are three options for adding domains to Shopify:

  • Buying a Domain through Shopify
  • Connecting a Domain to Shopify
  • Transferring a Domain to Shopify

Buying a Domain through Shopify

If your store is looking to easily purchase and connect a domain to Shopify, purchasing through Shopify is the best bet. It may not always be the cheapest, but it will be the most convenient. Please note, however, that if this is not the first domain that has been connected to your store's Shopify page, it will redirect to the previously used domain. If purchasing a domain for your store for the first time, the page's visible web address will be automatically configured. This name can be changed later.

Connecting a Domain to Shopify

If your store already has a domain name through a third-party vendor, another option is to simply connect that domain to your store's Shopify page.

Transferring a Domain to Shopify

If your store already has a domain name through a third-party vendor and is wanting to access and manage all domain settings from the Shopify admin page, transferring your domain may be the easiest path.

Creating a Subdomain

Additionally, if your store is seeking to create subdomains that will link back to your main domain. Subdomains are created subsets of your stores main domain by adding prefixes, such as www. You can add these subdomains to your store's main domain in the following two ways:

Up to twenty domains/subdomains can be added to your Shopify store, aside from the original .myshopify.com URL.
